#7 Tips That Will Help To ‘Rocket’ Your Online Business SuccessDo you have a clear strategy for your marketing or are you suffering from information overload....? '
You may be new to internet marketing, or actively thinking about the opportunities of working from home, escaping the ‘rat-race’ or developing your business online. You are certainly not alone. There is a huge industry that has developed that promises the ‘secret’ to online success.
I know. I bought my fair share of courses, books and systems in the early days. Some were useful but some just led to further confusion.
So maybe we need to learn from a famous quote by Albert Einstein?
If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself
– Albert Einstein
Firstly, let’s get back to some basics. What is marketing?
Here is a useful definition:
Marketing is the process of communicating the value of a product or service to potential customers, for the purpose of selling that product or service….
So it’s not about just trying to sell something to someone. It’s about communication the value/ benefits to them first. People don’t like to be sold too.
So in this article, I thought I’d outline the 7 essential tips for succeeding online.
#1 Education + Coaching
The foundation for your success online needs to be great education. You can have the best products and services in the world, but without the application of the correct knowledge, you will be missing out on the huge opportunities of accessing a global marketplace.
There are countless eBooks and courses online and at times it’s very easy to suffer from information overload. Learning from other successful marketers, who have a proven track record, should be an essential aspect of your ‘journey’ online. Also, having a support network and community can make a huge difference to your business. Being able to learn and share new ideas and what’s working now will put you at a distinct advantage.
So stay in a learning ‘mode’. Learn something new each day and then apply it to your business.
Fortunately, I am a member of a superb training/ coaching resource and online community of entrepreneurs. Tapping into this knowledge daily helps to keep me on track and motivated. What support and training do you currently have?

#2 Know Your Products / Services
creating, delivering and communicating value to customers
If you are a business owner looking to promote your products/ services online, this may seem like an obvious point. But for many, they will be marketing other companies products and services and earning a commission on sales. This is known as affiliate or partner marketing and is a huge industry online.
It stands to reason then, that before you can communicate the value of a product or service to potential customers, you need to understand it yourself first! So take time to really study and understand what you are offering. So you can promote the benefits.
#3 Know Your Target Market
So the first point is to understand the products/ services that you are promoting.
The second part of the equation is to figure out who would be interested in knowing more about them and then hopefully buying some of them! The industry term for these people is target market. Who are you targetting?
Marketing is the process of choosing target markets through market analysis and market segmentation, as well as understanding consumer behavior and providing superior customer value
The quote above talks about target markets. There is quite likely to be more than one.
An example could be if you were selling vitamin/ mineral supplements. Who buys these? Well it could be sports minded/ athletes, pregnant mothers, older people etc.
The point here is that when you are promoting any product or service, it is really important that you think about precisely who you are targeting. If you try and sell to everyone, your advertising will be far to broad and appeal to no-one. Be specific, target smaller groups with very targeted advertising.
#4 Understand How To Contact Your Target Market Online
Ok, so you now understand the benefits of the products/ services you are marketing and you have figured out the types of people who you think would be most interested in them (i.e. your target market).
The next step is to find out where these people ‘hang-out’ online. Because you want to be able to find these people so that you can put your products/ services in front of them and promote the benefits.
– Which websites do they visit?
– Which forums do they belong too?
– What books do they read?
Once you have researched and understand this aspect, you can then work on a strategy for creating ads/ content which also promotes your products/ services that is likely to appeal to them.
#5 Understand Copywriting
Copywriting is an essential skill to grasp. The importance of copywriting in marketing can be best illustrated by the fact that the top copywriters in the industry earn a lot of money!
Copywriting is writing for the purpose of advertising or marketing. The words (called ‘copy’) is meant to persuade someone to buy a product, or influence their beliefs.
Good copywriting can be reinforced by good visuals/ images. Essential in the creation of compelling ads. But it is much more than just about writing for ad creation, as you will also be producing other written content, such as articles, for posting online. It may not be an ad as such, but you are still likely to informing and educating potential customers.
On a recent visit to the US, I was fortunate to meet one of the greatest copywriters of all time, Joseph Sugarman. His book, ‘The Adweek Copywriting Handbook‘ is, in my opinion, an essential read.
This article cannot go into great detail here, but basically the way that you write about your products/ services will have a great impact on whether you make good sales or not. The products/ services you are promoting may be the very best, but it’s about whether you get this message across to the potential customer.
#5 Ad Creation + Traffic Generation
Online there are basically two main approaches to advertising. Paid and ‘free’.
a. Paid Advertising
Paid advertising is as it sounds. Advertising where you pay a third party to display your ad or send it to there subscriber list. Examples include Facebook ads, banners on websites and solo ads (i.e. email marketing).
b. ‘Free’ Advertising
Often described as ‘free’ advertising, there is, however, a cost involved – time. Whether you are an individual or a business, time obviously does have a value. ‘Free’ often involves content creation. Examples include writing articles for your website, creating videos for your Youtube Channel and other video websites such as Vimeo; creating slide presentations for document sharing sites, such as ScribD.
The key point to remember is that when we talk about traffic generation, what we are really talking about is traffic diversion. The web traffic is there in abundance. When you advertise or create content, what you are trying to do is to divert some of it to your websites!
#6 Customer Follow-Up
Finally, you need to have a strategy for following up with potential customers and keeping in touch. This can happen through various channels but
– Autoresponder: Software that automates the process.
– Social media: Company Facebook Page
These points should help to set out a framework for you. Yes, there is more detail to know for each of these steps and I will expand upon these in future post. But the overall strategy is the most important thing. Without the framework, a blueprint in place, the detail will only cause confusion.
#7 Test, Review, Modify and Learn
This above may seem like ‘catch-all’ but it is an essential aspect of marketing online. The important point to note is that marketing is part art and part science. Some things will work and some won’t and it is important to review your findings and make modifications as necessary.
When using paid advertising in particular, it is important to test small first. Find out which of your ads are working before scaling up. It is quite likely that you will create several variations of the same ad to see which one performs best.
But this also applies to other aspects of your marketing too. Take time to review and assess what you have done and the results achieved. What could be improved, what could be done differently?
And lastly, remember that the online world is dynamic. What was working a few years ago, may not be working now. So keeping following us to keep up-to-date with all the latest developments!
